Industrial Strength Community Service
By Cathy Ivers
The Boys & Girls Club on Alhambra Avenue, a valuable asset in the community for our youth, recently got a BIG facelift. Thanks to the hard work of employee volunteers from the Maintenance Department at Shell Martinez, Refinery, in partnership with their vendors, Brand Scaffolding and Discovery Land Care and the City of Martinez, they transformed the unattractive hot blacktop surface, complete with weeds poking up through the cracks, into a welcoming green oasis. The old asphalt and unsafe sidewalks were replaced with new walkways and grass. Work to be completed in the near future include, extending the wrought iron fence from Plaza Ignacio Park across the front of the Club and planting some shrubs and flowers around the foundation of the building.
"We are so excited about this extreme makeover. The Boys & Girls Club relies on Shell and their employees for lots of different things and they continue to support us in many ways. We are so grateful for the investment that Shell and their employees continue to make in the Boys & Girls Club and the young people in our communities," said Tuong Truong, CEO of the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Diablo Valley.
Shell pays their employees up to 18 hours per year to go out into and be of service to the community. During the past several years, they have completed over 50 volunteer projects per year, including painting the Senior Community Center and Martinez Public Library, sorting food a the Food Bank and helping younsters to read.
